Music Therapy

What is Music Therapy?

Music Therapy is the clinical & evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a certified music therapist who has completed an approved music therapy university-level program. Music therapists use music safely and ethically to address human needs within cognitive, communicative, emotional, musical, physical, social, and spiritual domains (Canadian Association of Music Therapists).

Music therapy methods include activities such as musical recreation, improvisation, composition, and receptive with the aim of controlling or reducing harm resulting from substance use (Aldridge, 2010). Drug treatment centers often offer group music therapy as it fosters a safe environment while increasing group cohesiveness and positively affecting the recovery process (Buino & Simon, 2011).
